Restrictions on the Export of Encoding Chips to China

time: 2022-08-03

On August 1, 2022, Tim Archer, CEO of Lam Research Corp, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that the United States will further restrict the sale of chip manufacturing equipment produced by American companies to Chinese companies.
Previously, the US government had prohibited American companies from selling equipment to China that produces chips of 10nm or smaller. The new ban will expand the scope of the ban to devices required for chips smaller than 14nm. This latest export restriction aims to weaken China's efforts to become a major chip manufacturing country and compete with TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and Intel.
Tim Archer believes that "the expected changes have indeed come, and we are prepared to fully comply. We are working with the US government." The new export licensing requirements seem to only apply to logic chips, not storage chips.
